Cross sections in a root of Zea mays

Two cross sections made with a razor blade in a primary Zea mays root in a region near the hair zone are shown below. In the first section the pericycle is apparent below endodermis and consists in a monolayer of small cells. The cortex consists of polygonal cells. Root hairs are not observed at level of rhizodermis (rh).
