Xanthosoma <\/span>sagitifolium<\/span> is<\/span> an <\/span>herbaceous<\/span>, <\/span>perennial<\/span>,  tropical plant in <\/span>Araceae<\/span> family<\/span> native to <\/span>northern<\/span> South America. This plant can <\/span>reach<\/span> 1 to 2m <\/span>tall.has<\/span> different<\/span> common<\/span> names<\/span> such<\/span> as taro, <\/span>tannia<\/span>, <\/span>purple<\/span> elelphant<\/span> ear<\/span> among<\/span> others<\/span>. It <\/span>is<\/span> one of the <\/span>oldest<\/span> cutivated<\/span> crops<\/span> in the world and <\/span>was<\/span> introduced<\/span> as culture in <\/span>different<\/span> tropical <\/span>regions<\/span> in <\/span>which<\/span> they<\/span> are <\/span>widely cultivated for underground stems, tubers used in various meals. In <\/span>West Africa it is the most consumed aroid.<\/span>However, this plant is fast-growing herb that has escaped from cultivation and become invasive. The leaves are arrow-shaped with long petioles and wavy margins. It grows best in humid tropical rainforest climates and along stream banks and moist areas. This plant is a monocotyledon.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cross sections have been made in samples collected in Geneva Botanical Garden, fixed in FAA and embedded in paraffin. The firs microphotograph below illustrates a section characterized by (1) an aerenchyma and (2) vascular bundles distributed (blue arrows) on different circles at periphery of the section and in its central parenchyma (aer). <\/span><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
