They are located at extremities of stem and root and are called \u201capical meristems\u201d, root apical meristem and shoot apical meristem.<\/p><p style=\"margin-top: 15px; margin-bottom: 15px; line-height: 25.2px; color: #404040; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\">Stem cells in primary meristems divide to produce (1) identical cells that will remain stem cells and (2) cells that will differentiate. Mitosis are observed in sections through primary meristems after appropriated staining of paraffin sections. Ex.\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/michelecrevecoeur.ch\/?page_id=418\">Feulgen<\/a>,\u00a0DAPI,<a style=\"background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; text-decoration-line: none;\" title=\"Coloration \u00e0 l'h\u00e9matoxyline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unige.ch\/sciences\/biologie\/bioveg\/crevecoeur\/competences\/coloration-hematoxyline\/\">\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/michelecrevecoeur.ch\/?page_id=379\">hematoxylin<\/a><br \/>In a young plant the most active primary meristems are those of shoot and root tips. These groups of meristematic cells are already present in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/michelecrevecoeur.ch\/?page_id=2358\"><strong>the embryo<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>in mature seed, a miniature plant.<br \/>Three meristematic tissues are observed in these primary apical meristems, in both shoot and root\u00a0: \u00a0protodermis, procambium and ground meristem meristem which form primary tissues.<\/p><p style=\"margin-top: 15px; margin-bottom: 15px; line-height: 25.2px; color: #404040; font-family: arial; font-size: 14px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\">Whereas the root apical meristem is histogen the apical meristem present in shoot tip or in bud has a dual role: it forms tissues (histogen function) and it generates above-ground aerial organs , buds, leaves\u2026.(organogenesis function) throughout the lifespan of the higher plants.<br \/>Shoot branches are derived from axillary meristems initiated in the axils of leaves with the same organization.
